Social Justice Plate Collection
Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (RAIHN) is a non-profit organization of faith communities assisting homeless families in achieving sustainable independence. This is done by supporting them with resources of food, shelter, personalized case management, and a broad network of caring volunteers. Every fifteen weeks a faith community hosts RAIHN guests in their place of worship for one week.

On the second Sunday of each month, we have a special in-gathering of donations of toiletries, paper goods, and non-perishable food items to benefit the Southeast Ecumenical Ministry's Food Cupboard.
The SEM Food Cupboard has been serving the needs of the hungry and the elderly poor in the 14607, 14610, 14618, and 14620 zip code areas for more than 30 years. More than 20 local churches work together to make SEM programs happen.
On the third Sunday of each month our Sunday morning plate collection is donated to an organization involved in social justice work. Most recipient organizations are local. Our members and friends are encouraged to submit the names of worthy organizations. A committee reviews the organizations and selects a recipient. Examples of past recipients are Metro Justice and Hillside Community Center.
The March 2008 plate offering was collected for Heifer Project International to buy a trio of rabbits for a family in a developing country. The suggested donation was 25 cents for each chocolate egg the donor was planning to eat on Easter. Who said UUs draw nothing from medieval Christianity?
